Egress? Is that like a bird?

Location Seen: On the stairwell of an indoor parking lot, downtown Boston. Do only people studying for the SAT get the advantage of being saved by an emergency exit? Who knew fire exits could be intellectualized. Or... why?

Jon sent me this quote in response to this post from Terry Pratchett's "Small Gods." It fits.

"Words are the litmus paper of the minds. If you find yourself in the power of someone who will use the word "commence" in cold blood, go somewhere else very quickly. But if they say "Enter", don't stop to pack."

  1. I think this is somebody's way of artificially selecting people with large vocabularies. This is something that I, by the way, fully support.

  2. Egress...yeah it definitely leaves the foul taste of pretension and contrived intellect in one's mouth...whatever that tastes like.

Still, as my colleague and p.i.c. Dr. Stephen Siegel points out, nothing tops the word "truism" as in "it is a truism that..." for worst word of all time. Except maybe the 'c' word.

That's right. I'm talking about chortle. *convulses uncomfortably*
